1. There are several people at SRI who could give a very good review of
your book. I can highly recommend Mike Wilber, who maintains our
Lisp system, Earl Sacerdoti, who designed Qlisp, Bernie Elspas, who
writes very beautiful elegant code, Rich Fikes, who has written many
AI programs in Lisp, and me.
2. I am not merely interested, I am extraordinarily interested, in
building a Lisp machine. We (me and Rob Shostak who knows a great
deal about hardware, among other things) have spent many hours thinking
about the possibilities. The question you ask is loaded, I assume, since
you mention it in the context of HP. If you are interested, we would
be delighted to discuss our ideas and our knowledge of other
efforts (Deutsch at Parc and Greenblat at Mit-ai). Regardless of whether
you are interested in us, I personally believe that a company like HP
could make a happy killing by being the leader in supplying the world
with lisp cycles.

JACK GOLDBERG, IN RESPONSE TO YOUR NETMAIL, WROTE ME
THE FOLLOWING NOTE:
OUR HIRING POTENTIAL DEPENDS ON SEVERAL PROMOTIONAL ACTIVITIES
(COMMAND CONTROL, NEW ARCHITECURE, ARPA SOFTWARE ENGINEERING) THAT
ARE VERY IFF AT THIS TIME. I CAN'T OFFER ALLEN ANY ENCOURAGEMENT
FOR SEVERAL MONTHS.
I WOULD ADD, IN POSTSCRIPT THAT SINCE YOU LAST CAME BY, SEVERAL
APPROACHES THAT WE HAVE MADE TO ARPA, BOTH FORMAL AND INFORMAL HAVE
BEEN REJECTED. IF I WERE LOOKING FOR A JOB RIGHT NOW, I BELIEVE
THAT SRI-AI MIGHT BE A GOOD PLACE, PROVIDED ONE WERE ENTHUSIASTICALLY
WILLING TO PURSUE THE IDEA OF COMMAND CONTROL THAT ARPA IS CURRENTLY
PUSHING. THE SRI-AI CENTER IS VERY LIKELY TO MOVE HEAVILY IN
THAT DIRECTION, AND THEY WILL NEED EXCELLENT PEOPLE LIKE YOURSELF
WHO ARE ABLE TO TAKE AN INTERESTING IDEA AND REALLY MAKE A WORKABLE
SYSTEM, RATHER THAN A TOY SYSTEM.
